Peace & Light at a Stressful Time

November 24, 2020 2 min read 10 Comments

The Season of Light is upon us. And while you expect some stress during this time of year, the holiday season could be more difficult than usual. This year, instead of the fun things like holiday parties, get-togethers, or travel to see loved ones, you might limit your time with others and put some traditions on hold. But you can still find peace and feel the spirit of the holidays this year.

As you make your holiday preparations, they may be different, but they don’t have to be a downer. Instead of baking cookies for others, write a personal note or email as a way of spreading the spirit of the holiday. Consider asking friends and family to share photos in a central place using a photo share app or create e-photo books as gifts for those you can’t see on the holiday.

Some additional things to keep in mind during this time of year:

Daylight

Regardless of whether you’re close or far from friends and family, your moods may be affected this time of year. As the days get shorter you aren’t exposed to as much light—a vital nutrient for your body (which is ironic given this is the season of light!). In 2020, many Americans are experiencing issues related to mood that have already left them feeling gloomy just when seasonal depression typically kicks in.

Vitamin D

Address your mood issues on a physical and spiritual level. First, if you think that the shorter days are affecting you, consider getting a light box, which simulates daylight. Similarly, check that your vitamin D level is normal because it tends to decline in winter months and can contribute to seasonal blues and lethargy. Supplement if your levels are low.

The Small Stuff

Often, what brings you down on a day-to-day basis can be categorized as “the small stuff.” Although 2020 could be categorized as “a whole lot of big stuff,” and rightly so, some of it will be merely a blip 10 years from now. Take a step back and see things from a larger perspective. Turning to the Serenity Prayer gives many peace, as well.

Gratitude

A simple but powerful way to improve your mood is to practice gratitude. Much like faith, gratitude is hard to find when you need it most, but always there when you practice. So, write five things you are grateful for today and do it for 30 days. Studies show your mood is almost guaranteed to improve. And, chances are you’ll share that gratitude with others, and it will impact their lives for the better.

No matter what’s going on in the world or who you are in close contact with physically, there are ways to use your spirit, attitude, and efforts to bring peace and kindness to others. As you look for ways to do this, you may notice others doing the same—even for you!

Be the light during this season. Be at peace.
Before you know it, you’ll feel the magic of the season just like you have in other years.

How will you spend your holiday season? Please share!
